How the Angry Birds 2 community team laid the infrastructure to make the Shade launch a success without a shadow of a doubt.
When Shade materialized in Angry Birds 2 as the first permanent bird added to the flock since 2022, she brought a unique tactical edge to the slingshot. Her ability to phase through solid structures before unleashing a spinning slash of destruction offered players a fresh way to dismantle complex towers that no piggy could see coming. The Angry Birds 2 community on the other hand are an observant bunch, seeing hints about Shade’s arrival that were laid out by the community team months in advance.
In the year leading up to the launch of Shade in Angry Birds 2, the game’s community team developed an open and honest rapport with players, and also established channels to act as hubs for Angry Birds 2 players to discuss what is happening. All of this together meant that when Shade was finally revealed, the community was ready and waiting to welcome her.
Let’s learn how it all happened with input from Angry Birds 2 Community Manager, Desirée Elveljung.
Before Shade was even a silhouette on a teaser poster, the Angry Birds 2 community team were busy rebuilding the bridge between the Stockholm studio and its players, first by recognizing the ways in which the game may have fallen short for some players.
“We’ve had these issues of maybe not being as transparent as we should be,” Desirée explains. “The community felt kind of in the dark about things like why we did this and not that, so we wanted to do something to basically strengthen our relationship with the community and to be more transparent about what is happening in the game.”
What followed was the “Flock Forward” initiative, in which the team prioritized transparency, explaining the “why” behind game balance and development decisions in periodic blog posts. Now with a more well informed group of players, when the time came to start teasing a new bird, the community wasn’t just watching, they were investigating.
A major cornerstone of this strategy involved establishing dedicated Angry Birds 2 presences on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.
“We needed to meet the players where they live,” Desirée explains. “An internal study showed our audience was incredibly active on Instagram and TikTok, but they wanted content that spoke specifically to their daily experience in the game.”
This strategy has paid off, with Angry Birds 2 fans readily adopting the new channels, and the Angry Birds 2 community team continues to produce engaging content for them. This is particularly true on TikTok, a channel that since being revived in late 2025, has rocketed from 200k to nearly 500k followers.
“The results have been night and day,” Desirée says regarding the move to dedicated platforms. “On Facebook, the sentiment can be quite negative, so being on Instagram and TikTok has created a place where discussion can be more positive and fun. We have also been mindful of the fact that these are very different channels in terms of the tone of voice and the types of content we post, where Facebook is a more informative channel, and TikTok is more meme-heavy for example. It’s been a success for sure, both in terms of followers and the community being active there.”
The impact of these dedicated channels was immediate, and the team saw a significant jump in monthly engagement rates compared to what they were previously experiencing. This concentrated energy meant that when the team began dropping clues, the signal wasn’t lost in the noise.
Because the community was more engaged than ever, the team could afford to be subtle. The “hunt” for Shade began with a Dahlia plushy tucked into the background of a documentary video about the Angry Birds 2 Space event which took place in October 2025. Such a small detail could have gone unnoticed, but in the Angry Birds 2 community it sparked immediate speculation.
The team followed up this initial teaser with further clues on their social media channels, which ramped up the excitement levels even higher. This heightened state of anticipation would later turn a potential setback into a massive win. When a technical glitch caused Shade to appear in a bundle in the in-game shop ahead of schedule, the community—already primed by the teasers—exploded with discussion.
“This actually started a massive internal debate in the community,” Desirée says. “They weren’t sure if it was a real change or an elaborate hoax.”
Because the team had built these direct lines of communication, the leak generated a level of anticipation they hadn’t seen in years, creating significantly more organic discussion than a standard announcement ever could have.
Of course, most of the teasing was intentional. “We work closely with the product marketing team and from the beginning, we agreed that we wanted to do a traditional teaser campaign because it is a great way to build engagement, buzz, and interest,” says Desirée. “We know Dahlia is well known among hardcore fans, and we knew that dropping hints early on would definitely lead to deeper engagement.”
The Shade launch proved that a character reveal is only as strong as the community receiving it. By establishing dedicated channels and fostering a culture of transparency, the Angry Birds 2 team built a direct connection with players that ensured Shade’s arrival echoed across the entire fan base.
As the YouTube channel surpassed 600,000 views on Shade-specific content in just three weeks, the message was clear: when you build a home for your most dedicated players, they’ll be there to catch every clue you drop.
