Ever since SEGA’s acquisition of Rovio in August 2023, fans have been buzzing about potential crossovers between Angry Birds and SEGA’s iconic franchises. The wait is finally over as the iconic Angry Birds character Red is rolling into action as a permanent playable character in the upcoming Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble DLC — launching April 8, 2025, at 6 PM PDT.

This marks the first time an Angry Birds character has been featured in a SEGA PC/console title DLC, blending two beloved franchises for an unforgettable fan experience. Players can roll, bounce, and smash through levels as Red, appearing in the classic art style — a nostalgic nod to longtime Angry Birds fans.

“The classic Angry Birds art style holds a special place in our fans’ hearts,” said Eeva Aaltonen, Head of Brand Operations at Rovio. “We’re thrilled to bring Red into the vibrant world of Super Monkey Ball, creating a fresh and joyful experience for players by bringing two of their favorite childhood games together.”

Angry Birds characters have been previously featured in SEGA titles during the limited-time mobile game crossover event last year. These crossovers closely follow Rovio’s transmedia strategy, which involves expanding the Angry Birds narratives across different media platforms. The new DLC exemplifies the strength and versatility of the Angry Birds IP, offering fans a fresh way to experience their favorite characters with a triumph of nostalgia.

“Angry Birds has already captured the hearts of millions and we’re always looking for new ways to expand the experience,” said Aaltonen. “Our collaborations with SEGA, and nostalgic IPs such as Super Monkey Ball, open up fantastic opportunities to explore new platforms and formats, ensuring the brand continues to thrive and evolve.”

The Angry Birds DLC for Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble will be available for download on April 8, 2025, at 6 PM PDT.
