Sustainability Achievements
Our new sustainability strategy was created in late 2024. Since a lot had changed since launching our previous sustainability strategy it was time to revise our approach. After analyzing our current business strategy and taking in the learnings from our double materiality analysis we kept the existing structure of three key focus areas but refreshed the naming and revisited the goals under each area.
We rolled out neuroinclusion efforts such as implementing workplace adjustments (e.g., silent working space), introducing neuroinclusive meeting guides, launching a neurodiversity working group and celebrating Neurodiversity Celebration Week. We also advocated for neuroinclusion within the game industry by sharing learnings at industry conferences.
At RovioCon Google 2024, for the second year in a row, our Games for Good track highlighted how games and gaming companies can create positive impact by focusing on building diverse and inclusive teams, recognizing hidden biases in AI, using mobile games to support environmental causes, and promoting understanding of neurodiversity in the games and tech industries.
Aligning with Earth Day’s “Planet vs. Plastics” theme, our Birds Helping Birds campaign featured themed in-game events in our three titles, a social media initiative, and branded visuals on the Times Square Billboard. In partnership with EARTHDAY.ORG, we launched a website to educate our players about the impact of plastic pollution on birds. Rovio made a donation to support EARTHDAY.ORG’s work on protecting our planet.
We launched the Playbook for Inclusive Game Development and Marketing to address various development areas, such as inclusive player research, character design, and game accessibility, supporting our teams in creating games that embody our inclusivity values.
We joined Better Games Together (BGT), a collective of Finnish game studios that share the goal of making our companies, as well as the wider industry, more accepting of LGBTQIA+ people.
RovioCon Google 2023 was a fantastic forum for exploring essential topics together. For the first time, we hosted a whole track focused on the impact and role of games in making our world a better place and why game companies should care about it.
We participated in Playing for the Planet’s Green Game Jam for the fourth year in a row, with a record number of our games joining. With different events & activities in Angry Birds Dream Blast, Angry Birds Journey, and Angry Birds Match 3, we raised awareness and donated to enable valuable fieldwork for the Amazon ecosystem.
During 2022, we reached carbon neutrality within our value chain emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) matching our emissions with voluntary carbon market credits
We continued to strengthen the sustainability focus by hiring a Head of DEI in September 2022.
We continued the work with UNICEF Finland to support and give a second chance to the most vulnerable adolescent girls in and out of school in Senegal.
Heini Kaihu was appointed as CSO in September 2021. Reflecting the importance of the CSO role, Heini sits in the leadership team.
