Tackling my first job as a game designer was intimidating at first, but I was treated as a valued member of the team from day one.

I first joined Rovio as a game design trainee. It was my first job as a game designer so to say that I was nervous before my first day would be an understatement. Imposter syndrome was in full force. Was I really fit for the job? Did they even know who they were hiring? Maybe it was a mistake and they hired the wrong person!?

I was surrounded by industry professionals who are experts in their craft, but who are also friendly and just happy to share what they learn!

Safe to say, these concerns were gone by the first few days on the job. That is thanks for two major things. First of all, just the people. I was surrounded by industry professionals who are experts in their craft, but who are also friendly and just happy to share what they learn! I never felt bad about asking a question, digging in further, or just wanting to know more. Secondly, despite being a trainee, I didn’t feel like one, more like just another member of the team with my own set of responsibilities that directly affected the project I was working on. I wasn’t coddled. I felt like a valued team member whose voice mattered.

It’s safe to say then, that the day I was offered to work permanently as a junior designer was one of the happiest days of my life.

Since then, I haven’t stopped growing and learning. With my supervisors encouraging me to take on tasks and activities I personally want to pursue within the company, to further my own career development.
