The experience will be integrated into an Angry Birds title during the General Assembly of the United Nation events in New York this September when world leaders will announce sustainable goals around climate, in advance of COP 21 in Paris.

Washington, D.C.
– Rovio Entertainment, in cooperation with the Earth Day Network, will announce  Angry Birds’ “Champions for Earth” – an awareness driving in-game experience –  at Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day, on April 18th, at the National Mall. The experience will be integrated into the game in September timed to the General Assembly events in New York. As world leaders, including the Pope and United Nations dignitaries, work through climate issues to announce sustainable goals– there will be playable content aimed to engage the millions of Angry Birds players around the globe during this discussion.

“For years, many of our games have supported initiatives regarding earth sustainability, climate change and preservation. It is a real privilege to work with Earth Day Network on an Angry Birds gaming experience to raise awareness of climate change. It’s a cause that really matters to us both and to Angry Birds fans as well. Stay tuned. This will be fun,” said Patrick Liu, Rovio Creative Director.

Rovio and Earth Day Network share common goals with regard to the fight against climate change and the preservation of biodiversity worldwide, and aim to further these goals by raising awareness in innovative ways and on an unprecedented scale.

“By leveraging the global reach and informational power of gaming technology, Earth Day Network and Rovio Entertainment – the creators of the beloved and wildly successful Angry Birds – will mobilize millions around the world to take action on climate change,” said Kathleen Rogers, Earth Day Network President.

By integrating environmental conscious content into Angry Birds - the most downloaded mobile game in the world - the joint initiative between the two groups will allow millions of players around the world to interact with information related to the conservation, protection, enhancement and support of nature and our natural resources.

Rovio Entertainment reports growth in games and media businesses in 2014http://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/630/rovio-entertainment-reports-growth-in-games-and-media-businesses-in-2014Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the creator of the globally loved Angry Birds brand, announced today preliminary financial results for the full 2014 calendar year. Rovio's total consolidated full-year revenue amounted to €158.3 million, down year on year by 9% based on comparable figures. EBITDA was 11% of revenue, amounting to € 17.0 million. Rovio’s games and media businesses revenue grew by 16% and 19% to €110.7 million and € 6.2 million respectively. The year on year decline of consumer product licensing revenues impacted revenue and profit.

Games revenue growth of €15.5 million was driven by the launch of six new games as well as exciting new content in the existing portfolio. In 2014 Rovio was one of the world’s top five most downloaded games companies, with close to 600 million new game downloads. The company's gaming revenues and gaming-related advertising revenue remained strong. Media revenue growth was driven by advertising revenue.

“2014 results show that steps in the game portfolio, free to play competency building and advertising are going in the right direction. I am confident that with new simplified organisation and clearer vision, we will be back to the path of growth in 2015” commented new CEO Pekka Rantala.

“I feel very good about our 2015 games roadmap. Since the beginning of the year we have launched two games, Jolly Jam and Angry Birds Stella POP! and we have soft launched two more. All of these are getting very good reviews. Our Asia expansion is also proceeding well. Angry Birds Fight will be our first game developed specifically for the world´s biggest game market, Japan. Furthermore, we have strong partnerships in China with Kunlun and Alibaba, and we are working with other partners in the region, including Korea”, Rantala added.

“On the consumer product side, 2014 was not a satisfactory year. However, the upcoming Angry Birds Feature Film is getting very positive reactions from major retail and license partners as well as from consumer focus groups. This will have a positive impact on licensing in the coming years. In the next few months, we expect major announcements of partnerships in the licensing space”, said Pekka Rantala.

The company, well known for being the first to build an entertainment brand from a mobile gaming app, is producing a high budget Angry Birds feature film. With an all star cast, including Jason Sudeikis (We are the Millers), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), the Angry Birds feature film  is set for global release in May 2016 and will be distributed globally by Columbia Pictures of Sony Entertainment.

Rovio’s Girl Pirates Storm Berlinalehttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/611/rovio%e2%80%99s-girl-pirates-storm-berlinale

Espoo, Finland-- January 22nd, 2015-- Rovio Entertainment’s first young adult book series, Storm Sisters, is ready for its close-up. The first book in the new pirate adventure series, Storm Sisters: The Sinking World, has been selected for the prestigious “Books at Berlinale.” The event, which is in its tenth year and held in conjunction with Berlin Film Festival and Frankfurt Book Fair, allows film producers to discover new books suitable for film adaptation. The Sinking World beat out approximately 130 submissions from over 25 countries to be part of the 11 finalists chosen to participate at the exclusive film industry event.

“It’s thrilling to see Storm Sisters garnering so much attention before it even hits the shelves! It’s just wonderful to see that Berlinale is as excited by a girls’ action pirate series as we are.” said Laura Nevanlinna, Rovio’s Publishing Director. “To be a part of Berlinale shows us the exciting potential our new young adult series has both as a novel and a possible film.”

Storm Sisters is a high action pirate adventure with a female twist. It tells the story of five girls, ages 11 to 17 sailing the seas in the 1780s, disguised as ‘girl pirates’ as they search for clues behind the mystery of their parents’ murders while trying to hide their real identities as members of a secret ancient guard. The Sinking World, written by Mintie Das, debut at Frankfurt Book Fair 2014 with much success and has already been secured by leading publishers in France, Hungary, Indonesia and Finland. The first book will hit shelves in late 2015/early 2016 and will be quickly followed up by the second title in the series, The Frozen Seas. To find out more about Storm Sisters, please go to stormsisters.rovio.com.

“Books at Berlinale” will take place on February 10, 2015 at the Berlin House of Representatives as part of the Berlinale Co-Production Market, whose main partners are the  Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung (MDM) and Creative Europe - MEDIA. Angry Birds is five today! Over 600 Billion Birds Flung and Counting…..http://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/594/angry-birds-is-five-today-over-600-billion-birds-flung-and-counting%e2%80%a6Espoo, Finland — December 11th 2014— Angry Birds celebrates its fifth BirdDay today, paying tribute to its fans with the release of an Angry Birds episode Play the Next Level.  With 30 new levels created entirely by fans, Play the Next Level is the result of a social media competition hosted by Rovio and its partners. This was one of the world’s largest user generated events with thousands of entries from every corner of the planet.

The new Angry Birds Play the Next Level episode would not have been possible without the support of Rovio’s friends and partners who have played a key role in Angry Birds’ five year story. The partners who called on their communities to take part in the social media competition were Angry Birds Nest, CERN, Google Play, LucasFilm, National Geographic, NHL, Pigineering, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twitter, UNICEF, WWF and collaborator NASA.

“When we saw the first concept image for Angry Birds back in December 2009, there was a strong feeling that this was an idea that would take flight - but we couldn’t have dreamt of its scale”, said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “In the past five years Angry Birds has grown into one of the most recognized brands in the world, and Rovio has grown into a global entertainment company producing games, books, animations, theme parks and many other products including a feature film due out in July of 2016.”

In its home nest in Finland, Rovio is hosting a party for over 2000 local kids and gifting every baby born in Finland on December 11 with a special edition baby Flock outfit.

But the day would not be complete without a match between the birds and the pigs. As part of the BirdDay celebrations, Rovio is hosting a Finnish hockey league match today between Espoo Blues and Porin Ässät.

Please join us tomorrow on the Rovio blog for photos from the BirdDay festivities!

CMI and Rovio Entertainment take a stance on peace

-- Finland -- November 10, 2014 -- After almost five years of on-going conflict between the birds and the pigs, Rovio and CMI are pleased to announce that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari has managed the impossible: a truce in the epic and ongoing conflict between birds and pigs in the Angry Birds world. Check out the peace negotiation video!

During Ahtisaari Days, held in Finland, November 11 to 13, King Pig and Red will put aside their differences and commit to peace, in what will be both an important milestone for the Angry Birds universe and an engaging way to spread knowledge of an important issue.

“It is my eternal optimism that all conflicts can be solved” says President Ahtisaari. “What are we trying to achieve? Human rights, decent healthcare, truth, reconciliation and a fair eggaliterian society”, he adds.

“1.5 billion people, every fifth person on the planet, are being robbed of freedom and basic human rights because of conflict”, said Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio. “We wanted to support CMI, the conflict resolution organisation founded by President Ahtisaari, by bringing awareness to the importance of conflict resolution and peace mediation. Angry Birds world offered the perfect way to do this and we are delighted to be part of the Ahtisaari Days.”

“At CMI, we constantly work on new and innovative ways to solve violent conflicts around the world,” said Elina Lehtinen, Head of Communications and Fundraising at CMI. “Our continued peaceful future lies in the hands of the next generation. Teaming up with Rovio allowed us to share our important peace message in an innovative way to audiences of all ages.”

Ahtisaari Days, which first started in Finland in 2011, is held yearly in November. The aim of the Days is to make peace work and mediation part of everyone’s daily life at all levels of society by treating the themes in Finnish schools and by raising discussion at public events. This year CMI is partnering with Rovio to jointly bring awareness about conflict resolution and peacebuilding to the next generation.

The campaign will be supported by Rovio’s & CMI’s Facebook and Twitter pages with the hashtags #AhtisaariDays #Ahtisaaripaivat

Ready to RETRY, RETRY, RETRY? Rovio LVL11’s first game is out now globally!http://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/565/ready-to-retry-retry-retry-rovio-lvl11%e2%80%99s-first-game-is-out-now-globallyRETRY, the first game from Rovio’s LVL11 publishing arm hits the global market - get ready to fly, and retry, and retry again!

Espoo, Finland -- October 22nd, 2014 -- Get ready for an 8-bit flying challenge in RETRY, the first global release by Rovio Entertainment’s experimental publishing arm, Rovio LVL11. RETRY was soft launched earlier this year in selected countries, and today the retro-style flying game is released in the Apple App Store and Google Play around the world. In RETRY the player hops into the cockpit of a small airplane, aiming to navigate through side-scrolling levels before the next inevitable crash.

“RETRY is a tribute to the video games of the 80s a lot of us grew up with”, said Jami Laes, Executive Vice President of Games, Rovio Entertainment. “The fun 8-bit aesthetics, chiptune music, the difficulty curve that hit you like a two-by-four - and you still persisted and beat those levels. It was all the sweeter for the challenge!”

Rovio LVL11 is the publishing arm announced earlier this year to release Rovio’s experimental projects.

“Rovio LVL11 are ‘the guys next door to the guys making Angry Birds’. We have at any given moment over 40 game prototypes in circulation, and some of them become a viral hit inside the company. RETRY was one of these, and it was the perfect candidate to be Rovio LVL11’s first release”, said Laes.

The RETRY soundtrack features a collection of songs inspired by 80s power anthems as well as Miami Vice aesthetics. The first single, Love Is Gonna Make Us Stronger (Theme from RETRY) by Ted Striker, is available to stream and download from Spotify, Deezer, iTunes and Google Play, with more to follow.

Rovio invites all kids in Europe to learn to codehttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/557/rovio-invites-all-kids-in-europe-to-learn-to-codeRovio partners with the European Union for EU Code Week

Espoo, Finland -- October 14th, 2014 -- At Rovio we know that when something is fun, it’s easy! This is why we’re calling on kids of all ages across Europe and around the world to join us in learning to code. And this week (October 11-17) we can do it all together – millions of kids simultaneously learning to code in a fun, creative way through the engaging power of the Angry Birds brand.

We live in a digital world where coding and creativity play a key role. Coding is a 21st Century skill that can unleash incredible amounts of creativity and problem solving. It’s the way our new reality is built, as the reality we live in includes a growing digital realm. There is nothing virtual about this digital part of our world, it is a growing and very real part of our lives. Learning to code is learning how our digital reality is built, and it’s learning how to be a builder of this new reality as opposed to being a consumer or bystander. At Rovio we believe everyone should have the opportunity to be part of this world.

Learning to code is also learning to think. The very essence of coding is based on learning to approach a problem creatively in an analytic, structured and process-based way. These same intellectual methods can be used equally well by the complex biological computers in our heads.

“At Rovio it all starts with the concept of flow. Learning happens effortlessly when you’re having so much fun you don’t even notice. The Rovio Fun Learning offering for the EU Code Week makes coding accessible and easy. The globally loved Angry Birds characters will help children and adults alike find an inviting path to the amazing world of digital creativity” said Sanna Lukander, Vice President, Rovio Fun Learning. “Kids of all ages will go from simple coding to advance coding with javascripts and css in a breeze. Imagine creating your own 3D environment and learning how to program the behavior of objects within it!”

Head over to www.funlearning.com and learn to code the fun way during EU Code Week!

The second annual EU Code Week takes place from October 11-17. This year’s event brings together millions of children, teachers, entrepreneurs and policy makers in classrooms and events across Europe to learn programming and related skills. Representatives from major IT and tech companies, including Rovio, are also in attendance.

Rovio’s Brands Inspire Children to Readhttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/554/rovio%e2%80%99s-brands-inspire-children-to-read

Rovio teams up with Room to Read and Worldreader

Espoo, Finland -- October 7th, 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment announces its commitment to children’s literacy and to the joy of storytelling through partnerships with two literacy charities, Worldreader and Room to Read. Rovio’s newest flock of feisty birds, Angry Birds Stella, celebrating individual uniqueness, female heroism and empowerment, will also come alive in a series of books, The Stella Diaries.

Published by Egmont Publishing in English, the empowering Stella series will also be distributed through Worldreader’s mobile reading application for feature and low-end android phones, called Worldreader Mobile, available to children and families in more than 175 countries. The Stella Diaries inspire children to read more while exploring their own natural super powers, which include reading and studying. The Stella Diaries premiere coincides with United Nations proclaimed International Day of the Girl Child on October 11th, 2014.

“We at Rovio believe that every child should have the opportunity to learn how to read. Literacy is more than just the technical ability to interpret letters, words, and sentences. Books and storytelling give the children the keys to understanding the world they live in", says Laura Nevanlinna, Publishing Director of Rovio Books.

Rovio stands for delighting the world with engaging and fun content, and in Rovio’s Book publishing it’s also about educational inspiration. During the past 3 years, Rovio has published more than 200 Angry Birds book titles across 40 countries and in 32 languages. Rovio’s characters and the world of Angry Birds are engaging and the fan engagement shows that they also motivate kids to read.

"This year we've had fantastic opportunities to support literacy”, adds Nevanlinna. During International Literacy Day in September, Rovio launched a charity campaign within the popular game Angry Birds Epic. During those two weeks, proceeds from the game went to Room to Read, a non-profit organization working for improving literacy and gender equality in education in the developing world.

Rovio Books also celebrates female heroism with a completely new young adult series created together with a sensational new author Mintie Das; Storm Sisters. Humor, emotions, action and girl characters fight all odds in looking for their lost parents in an exciting setting of historical fiction set for the modern reader.

The All-Star Comedy Voice Cast of "Angry Birds" Is Revealed By One Billion Sling Shots: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Peter Dinklagehttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/551/the-all-star-comedy-voice-cast-of-angry-birds-is-revealed-by-one-billion-sling-shots-jason-sudeikis-josh-gad-danny-mcbride-bill-hader-maya-rudolph-and-peter-dinklage

ESPOO, Finland and CULVER CITY, Calif. USA, October 1, 2014 – Over the past 48 hours, fans of Angry Birds have discovered a reveal within the game: by slinging one billion birds, fans had the chance to unlock the voice cast and get a sneak peek at the new look of the characters of the Angry Birds feature film.

Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, last year’s comedy hit We're the Millers) will lead the cast as Red, a bird with a temper problem.  Josh Gad, in his first animated role since the global smash hit Frozen, plays speedy Chuck, and Danny McBride (This is the End, Eastbound & Down) portrays the volatile Bomb. Bill Hader (Saturday Night Live, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) has joined the pork side, Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, The Maya Rudolph Show) will play Matilda, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones, X-Men: Days of Future Past) will play the legendary Mighty Eagle.

In the supporting roles, Keegan-Michael Key (Comedy Central’s Key & Peele), Kate McKinnon (Emmy nominee for Saturday Night Live), Tony Hale (Emmy winner for Veep, Arrested Development), Ike Barinholtz (Neighbors, The Mindy Project), Hannibal Buress (Broad City, Neighbors), Cristela Alonzo (ABC’s upcoming Cristela), Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street), Danielle Brooks (Orange is the New Black), Grammy nominee and Latin music sensation Romeo Santos, and YouTube stars Smosh (Ian Andrew Hecox and Anthony Padilla), who have over 30 million YouTube subscribers, will bring an extra kick to this angry flock.

John Cohen, producer of the film said, “I’m extremely proud of this cast.  Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Danny, Bill, Maya, and Peter bringing these characters to life, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of emerging comedic talent – these are some of the funniest people out there today, and we’re thrilled to have them all on board.”

Dwight Caines, president, Theatrical Marketing for Sony Pictures, said, “With two and a half billion gamers around the world, Angry Birds is one of those brands that can drive massive fan engagement.  That’s why we wanted to bring this unlock to the fans first.  Our filmmakers are cooking up a hilarious movie, and we know these fans can’t wait to see how they’re going to bring the Angry Birds’ story to life on the big screen of movie theaters.”

“We heard limbs and dialogue were all the rage in modern animation so we went all in. Not just one, but all of our characters have legs and wings! Except for the pigs, that is,” added Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio.

The upcoming movie marks Rovio’s first foray into feature films, although fans have already been introduced to the Angry Birds world with the weekly Angry Birds Toons animated series. Rovio launched the series last year through its Angry Birds game, as well as on select video-on-demand channel providers, Smart TVs, connected devices, and on select TV networks around the world. Paving the way for a full-length feature film, Angry Birds Toons has been a massive success for Rovio and has surpassed more than three billion views in its first 18 months.

Set to debut in the US on July 1, 2016, Angry Birds is directed by Fergal Reilly and Clay Kaytis, produced by John Cohen and Catherine Winder, and executive produced by Mikael Hed and David Maisel. The film is written by Jon Vitti. The film, which will be distributed globally by Sony Pictures, is produced by Rovio, and the Academy Award®-winning visual effects and animation company Sony Pictures Imageworks, headquartered in Vancouver, B.C., is the animation facility for the production.

University of Helsinki and Rovio Learning cooperate for playful learninghttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/543/university-of-helsinki-and-rovio-learning-cooperate-for-playful-learningEspoo, Finland -- September 16th 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment -- The University’s Playful Learning Center (PLC) researches the future of learning together with businesses. The learning research space to be opened with Rovio is the latest example of such cooperation.

The University’s Department of Teacher Education has established the Playful Learning Center (PLC), which researches playful learning together with businesses. The aim of the Center is to research and teach new learning solutions together with education experts and Finnish companies, and to enhance Finland’s status as a leading nation in education.

The opening of the Center also coincides with the establishment of the Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab, which will study learning solutions based on Rovio Learning’s philosophy of fun learning as well as the Angry Birds Playground early education project.

New partnerships

“The Playful Learning Center combines two areas of Finnish excellence, pedagogy and the technology industry. It offers new and interesting opportunities to develop learning in kindergartens, schools and different communities throughout an individual’s life,” explains Kristiina Kumpulainen, professor in pre-primary and primary education at the University of Helsinki.

"We invite all interested parties to join the cooperation. The Center enables multidisciplinary research that makes use of the University of Helsinki’s strong, internationally recognised expertise.”

Launched with Tekes funding, the Center is located on Siltavuorenpenger in Helsinki. Tekes is the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Making use of the research space for learning

At the first stage, the Center will house Rovio Learning's international Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab which focuses on developing fun learning solutions. The Center and the research cooperation are a natural continuation of the work the University of Helsinki has done with Rovio Learning in researching and providing training in playful learning solutions. The teachers for the first Angry Birds Playground kindergartens in China run by 123 Education Development Ltd have been trained in collaboration by the Helsinki University’s Department of Teacher Education and Rovio Learning. Openings will take place during the Fall.

Rovio Learning is known for collaborating with a number of scientific and educational brands and institutions such as NASA, CERN, the National Geographic Society and the University of Helsinki. “Learning can be seriously fun! We are happy to cooperate with the University of Helsinki to find out more about what can be learned through the research on playful learning”, says Sanna Lukander, Vice President of Rovio Learning.

The Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab and the tools it contains offer a wide range of cooperation opportunities. Participation in the research will be opened up to groups of children and their supervisors in pre-primary and primary education, students, product developers, training specialists as well as international experts and institutions in the field.

The goal has been to provide researchers with a versatile, easy-to-use research environment which also utilises technology. The sponsor providing electronic devices is Samsung.
