Espoo, Finland, 30th July 2015 With new towers to topple, pigs to pop and missiles to master, Rovio is thrilled to announce the launch of Angry Birds 2, the first sequel to the most downloaded mobile game series of all time.


While retaining the much-loved slingshot format, the visuals and gameplay of
Angry Birds 2 have been overhauled from the ground up, with multiple stages in each level and spectacular new spells – including blizzards, magic ducks and even hot chili peppers – to wield against the pigs, rock the Destruct-O-Meter and earn even more birds. Fans also can challenge other gamers worldwide and, for the first time, choose their own fowl to fling.

Alongside returning characters Red, Chuck, Bomb and the infamous King Pig, joining the flock is Silver, a dazzling but strange young bird rescued from Pig City. Growing up in pig captivity, she has acquired porcine habits and an odd sense of humor. But her incredible flying skills – and unique understanding of piggy ways – make her a cheeky and powerful new member of the flock.

“Design technology has evolved dramatically since the original game launched in 2009,” says Rovio co-founder Niklas Hed. “With Angry Birds 2 we wanted to bring a level of expressive depth and detail seen previously only in a console game or animated series – and create a new game that kids and adults alike won’t be able to put down.”

Angry Birds Space receives 15 new educational levels in ‘Solar System’ update

Espoo, Finland, 2nd July 2015 - Rovio's Angry Birds Space receives a rocket boost of an update titled Solar System that will include exciting learning  content about space across 15 new levels.  Each game level represents a planet, comet or satellite in our Solar System.

Creating fun learning  has been a success of the Angry Birds and NASA collaboration. Angry Birds Space is now present in many classrooms around the world. In the latest update, players can explore the planets of the Solar System and get to know fun facts just by playing the game.

Sanna Lukander, VP Learning, Rovio Entertainment says “We have spent time defining our approach to learning and strongly believe that learning is fun when you love what you do, when it’s fun to fail, when you feel intrinsically motivated and when you experience flow. The MOMAs (Marketing on Mobile Awards) reward the most effective campaigns in the mobile space and celebrate the most innovative work and companies across various industries.

The goal of the project was for Visit Finland to find new audiences and raise Finland's profile by going where the audience is – online and mobile. Partnering with Rovio meant that in less than two months from launch, Angry Birds fans had played over 250 million game sessions of On Finn Ice, and to date there has been more than 28 million Finland themed in-game fact card views, over 25 million video views related to the project as well as over 2 million new visits to visitfinland.com. The series will be published among the first titles of Imprint, a part of Macmillan Children's Publishing Group.

The rights for Rovio's first young adult novel series, Storm Sisters, written by Mintie Das, were acquired by Bastei Lübbe for a worldwide digital release in English and German. Bastei Lübbe is one of Germany’s leading trade publishers and home to bestselling authors such as Dan Brown and Jeff Kinney.

All rights were sold by Elina Ahlbäck of the Elina Ahlback Literary Agency, based in Helsinki and New York.

Freya tells the story of an ancient goddess adrift in the modern world. Resigned to obscurity in a Florida mental hospital, her quiet life is shattered by the arrival of an ominous man who knows exactly who she is - and has a job to offer. It’s the spark that kicks Freya out of her self-imposed exile and begins a thrilling return to the spotlight.

"Matthew Laurence has written a fantastic character, and working with Rovio to launch Freya is an exciting opportunity. Freya's story as a forgotten god in a modern world is fresh and compelling. I can't wait for readers to meet her," says Imprint Publisher Erin Stein.

Las Vegas, U.S.A - The Angry Birds flock have always been big fans of Rio, and this year they kick off Rovio and Rock in Rio’s 5 year partnership by flying into Las Vegas to party with a lineup of stars, as the world’s biggest music festival makes its first appearance in the U.S. with two themed Rock and Pop weekends (8-9 and 15-16 May).

– Rovio Entertainment, in cooperation with the Earth Day Network, will announce  Angry Birds’ “Champions for Earth” – an awareness driving in-game experience –  at Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day, on April 18th, at the National Mall. The experience will be integrated into the game in September timed to the General Assembly events in New York. As world leaders, including the Pope and United Nations dignitaries, work through climate issues to announce sustainable goals– there will be playable content aimed to engage the millions of Angry Birds players around the globe during this discussion. 

“For years, many of our games have supported initiatives regarding earth sustainability, climate change and preservation. It is a real privilege to work with Earth Day Network on an Angry Birds gaming experience to raise awareness of climate change. Rovio and Earth Day Network share common goals with regard to the fight against climate change and the preservation of biodiversity worldwide, and aim to further these goals by raising awareness in innovative ways and on an unprecedented scale.

Rovio's total consolidated full-year revenue amounted to €158.3 million, down year on year by 9% based on comparable figures. EBITDA was 11% of revenue, amounting to € 17.0 million. Rovio’s games and media businesses revenue grew by 16% and 19% to €110.7 million and € 6.2 million respectively. The year on year decline of consumer product licensing revenues impacted revenue and profit. 



Games revenue growth of €15.5 million was driven by the launch of six new games as well as exciting new content in the existing portfolio. In 2014 Rovio was one of the world’s top five most downloaded games companies, with close to 600 million new game downloads. The company's gaming revenues and gaming-related advertising revenue remained strong. Media revenue growth was driven by advertising revenue.    

“2014 results show that steps in the game portfolio, free to play competency building and advertising are going in the right direction. I am confident that with new simplified organisation and clearer vision, we will be back to the path of growth in 2015” commented new CEO Pekka Rantala.

“I feel very good about our 2015 games roadmap. Since the beginning of the year we have launched two games, Jolly Jam and Angry Birds Stella POP! and we have soft launched two more. All of these are getting very good reviews. Our Asia expansion is also proceeding well. Angry Birds Fight will be our first game developed specifically for the world´s biggest game market, Japan. Furthermore, we have strong partnerships in China with Kunlun and Alibaba, and we are working with other partners in the region, including Korea”, Rantala added.

“On the consumer product side, 2014 was not a satisfactory year. However, the upcoming Angry Birds Feature Film is getting very positive reactions from major retail and license partners as well as from consumer focus groups. This will have a positive impact on licensing in the coming years. In the next few months, we expect major announcements of partnerships in the licensing space”, said Pekka Rantala.

The company, well known for being the first to build an entertainment brand from a mobile gaming app, is producing a high budget Angry Birds feature film. With an all star cast, including Jason Sudeikis (We are the Millers), Josh Gad (Frozen) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones), the Angry Birds feature film  is set for global release in May 2016 and will be distributed globally by Columbia Pictures of Sony Entertainment.

Storm Sisters is a high action pirate adventure with a female twist. It tells the story of five girls, ages 11 to 17 sailing the seas in the 1780s, disguised as ‘girl pirates’ as they search for clues behind the mystery of their parents’ murders while trying to hide their real identities as members of a secret ancient guard. The Sinking World, written by Mintie Das, debut at Frankfurt Book Fair 2014 with much success and has already been secured by leading publishers in France, Hungary, Indonesia and Finland. The first book will hit shelves in late 2015/early 2016 and will be quickly followed up by the second title in the series, The Frozen Seas. This was one of the world’s largest user generated events with thousands of entries from every corner of the planet.



The new Angry Birds Play the Next Level episode would not have been possible without the support of Rovio’s friends and partners who have played a key role in Angry Birds’ five year story. The partners who called on their communities to take part in the social media competition were Angry Birds Nest, CERN, Google Play, LucasFilm, National Geographic, NHL, Pigineering, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twitter, UNICEF, WWF and collaborator NASA.

Their only own defense is to roll up into a ball when threatened.

Starting on November 17th through the 23rd, anyone can help raise awareness of the adorable Pangolins' plight for survival by playing Roll with the Pangolin, a tournament in Angry Birds Friends. Players are tasked to free illegally captured pangolins learning about their plight in the process.

In addition to the game, Rovio have created a series of videos where The Duke of Cambridge, President of United for Wildlife, describes the Pangolins’ situation and the important activities United for Wildlife is carrying out globally for wildlife preservation that are viewable in Rovio’s Toons.tv video channel available on all Angry Birds games.

-- Finland -- November 10, 2014 -- After almost five years of on-going conflict between the birds and the pigs, Rovio and CMI are pleased to announce that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari has managed the impossible: a truce in the epic and ongoing conflict between birds and pigs in the Angry Birds world. Check out the peace negotiation video!

During Ahtisaari Days, held in Finland, November 11 to 13, King Pig and Red will put aside their differences and commit to peace, in what will be both an important milestone for the Angry Birds universe and an engaging way to spread knowledge of an important issue.

“It is my eternal optimism that all conflicts can be solved” says President Ahtisaari. “What are we trying to achieve? Human rights, decent healthcare, truth, reconciliation and a fair eggaliterian society”, he adds.

“1.5 billion people, every fifth person on the planet, are being robbed of freedom and basic human rights because of conflict”, said Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio. “We wanted to support CMI, the conflict resolution organisation founded by President Ahtisaari, by bringing awareness to the importance of conflict resolution and peace mediation. Angry Birds Stella takes center stage in Chinese Idols Finals

 

Espoo, Finland -- November 7th 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment, the creator of Angry Birds, is pleased to announce its partnership with the Digital Entertainment Business Division of Alibaba Group and introduce Angry Birds Stella to fans through Chinese Idols, broadcasted by Shanghai Media Group.

Starting today, Angry Birds Stella will be seen throughout the season Finals of Chinese Idols, brightening the stage and inspiring fans with weekly behind the scenes footage of the popular television series in a dedicated section of the in-game channel, ToonsTV exclusively for China.

Alibaba Group’s Digital Entertainment Business Division is exclusively publishing the Angry Birds Stella Android game in China, with consumer products rollout through Alibaba’s e-commerce platforms.

The first Angry Birds Stella game was launched globally earlier this September and is the first Rovio game to be published by Alibaba in China.

Dramatic and engaging narrative revealing the story of Stella and her friends

ESPOO, Finland – October 31st, 2014 – Angry Birds Stella and friends come to ToonsTV with a brand new animated series full of adventure, fun - and drama! The first season, with 13 inspiring  six-minute episodes, is premiering tomorrow worldwide. Last week fans got a little surprise when the first episode was exclusively premiered inside the Angry Birds Stella game, over a week before the global launch. Angry Birds Stella series is all about the story - an entirely new, dramatic and engaging narrative that will develop throughout the season and open up the world of the flock’s fearless characters. With each episode, fans will learn more about our fierce pink heroine Stella and her battle with the good-bird-gone-bad and ex-BFF Gale. Why did Gale get the nickname “Bad Princess?” Can Stella and Gale be friends again? How do Stella, Poppy, Luca, Dahlia and Willow rock out with their clashing personalities - and their superpowers? Can there be friendship and adventure, without any complications? We can’t give out any spoilers, but there will be some cliffhangers!

Weekly episodes will be released on Saturdays on Rovio’s ToonsTV channel, which gained over 3 billion views in record time.  The series will also make its way to TV and VoD services reaching hundreds of millions of homes worldwide.

Espoo, Finland -- October 22nd, 2014 -- Get ready for an 8-bit flying challenge in RETRY, the first global release by Rovio Entertainment’s experimental publishing arm, Rovio LVL11. RETRY was soft launched earlier this year in selected countries, and today the retro-style flying game is released in the Apple App Store and Google Play around the world. In RETRY the player hops into the cockpit of a small airplane, aiming to navigate through side-scrolling levels before the next inevitable crash.

“RETRY is a tribute to the video games of the 80s a lot of us grew up with”, said Jami Laes, Executive Vice President of Games, Rovio Entertainment. “The fun 8-bit aesthetics, chiptune music, the difficulty curve that hit you like a two-by-four - and you still persisted and beat those levels. It was all the sweeter for the challenge!”

Rovio LVL11 is the publishing arm announced earlier this year to release Rovio’s experimental projects.

“Rovio LVL11 are ‘the guys next door to the guys making Angry Birds’. We have at any given moment over 40 game prototypes in circulation, and some of them become a viral hit inside the company. RETRY was one of these, and it was the perfect candidate to be Rovio LVL11’s first release”, said Laes.

The RETRY soundtrack features a collection of songs inspired by 80s power anthems as well as Miami Vice aesthetics. The first single, Love Is Gonna Make Us Stronger (Theme from RETRY) by Ted Striker, is available to stream and download from Spotify, Deezer, iTunes and Google Play, with more to follow.
