18 April 2013 -- Espoo, Finland-- Rovio Entertainment announced today that to support the continuous growth of Rovio’s games operations, Jami Laes has been appointed as the new EVP of Games and head of its game division. Jami´s extensive industry experience will be invaluable to Rovio’s management team.

Previously, Jami Laes has worked at Electronic Arts and Digital Chocolate. For the past six years, he has built global studio organizations to deliver world class social and mobile games. In particular, his experience in working with studios in China and Japan will support Rovio’s international development.

“Thinking back, this was a natural next step in my career. I have always been a huge fan of Angry Birds and it has been great to see the phenomenal success that Rovio has already achieved,” said mr. Laes. “Even so, we’ve only seen a fraction of what can be achieved with great brands like Angry Birds and Bad Piggies and I wanted to be a part of building that story.”

Petri Järvilehto, who had successfully steered the Games unit´s growth to this stage, has decided to move on in his career.

“With their excellent past track records, I have full confidence in our Games management and Studio heads to work together with Jami to do amazing work also in the future,” said Järvilehto. “This is a good time to hand over the reins.”

Rovio has had a strong start to the year, announcing its own in-game animation distribution channel and publishing its first free-to-play game. With this year´s roadmap, Rovio will continue to strengthen its position in the entertainment industry.

“Our games unit will, as it has up to now, continue playing a pivotal role in Rovio's success. Jami´s diverse international background and vision of the quickly-evolving games industry makes this the perfect moment for Jami to jump in and take us to the next level. Rovio Entertainment Reports 2012 Financial Resultshttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/284/rovio-entertainment-reports-2012-financial-results

Espoo, FinlandRovio Entertainment Ltd, the world’s leading provider of mobile entertainment and creator of the Angry Birds franchise, today had the pleasure of announcing its financial results for the full calendar year of 2012.

Total consolidated full year revenue grew by 101%, driven by a healthy growth in games revenue and consumer product sales, and amounted to €152.2 million (2011: €75.6 million). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) were €76.8 million (2011: €46.9 million), up 64% from year 2011, and net profit after tax was €55.5 million (2011: €35.4 million).

“Year 2012 was another record-breaking year for Rovio. We doubled our revenue with an EBIT margin of 50%, more than doubled our headcount, established new offices and a New Business Ventures unit.” said Rovio CFO Herkko Soininen. “Also, to protect our own, as well as our partners’ and our fans’ interests, we continue to invest heavily in brand protection globally.”

"Rovio has grown from a phenomenon to a very successful global business. In 2010 we set out to build an entertainment company and after last years performance we are on a strong path to achieve our goal.” Mikael Hed, Rovio CEO said.

Strong growth throughout all business segments

The financial outcome of 2012 is very positive for Rovio. Games and Consumer Products business units had a healthy growth and the company made good progress with its entertainment business.

In 2012 Rovio launched four major chart topping games. Angry Birds Space, Amazing Alex, Bad Piggies and Angry Birds Star Wars catapulted the total number of Rovio game downloads to more than 1 billion in May 2012 and the total number of active monthly users, across all platforms, to 263 million in December, 2012. Driven by these launches Rovio’s Games business unit’s revenue continued to grow fast. The main revenue sources of the games business are paid games, virtual goods, and advertising.

The Consumer Products business unit’s revenue for 2012 was more than three times the revenue of 2011 and accounted for 45% of Rovio’s total revenue.

The number of employees grew from 224 to 518 during the year 2012.

Market and business development expectations

Future business will to a large extent depend on the success of new game launches, the company’s ability to keep its fans engaged with Rovio content and the success of new initiatives in 2013. The sales of new devices and fun, entertaining content remain the main drivers for mobile game downloads and Angry Birds Toons channel views. Rovio expects its business to continue to grow and by today, the total number of Rovio game downloads has exceeded 1.7 billion.

“We have had a stellar start for this year. In addition to our successful games portfolio we recently launched our first Angry Birds Toons series through third party partners and our own in-game distribution channel. We will continue to strengthen our position in the entertainment business through continuing to innovate on our existing brands, exploring creating new IP as well as exploring opportunities with external parties,“ Mikael Hed said.

Rovio Moving Towards Digital Advertisinghttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/267/rovio-moving-towards-digital-advertisingFebruary 14, 2013 -- Espoo, Finland -- Rovio Entertainment, best known for its Angry Birds phenomenon, including nine blockbuster mobile and online games and hugely popular animations; has now grown into a global lifestyle brand.  Rovio, while inspired by traditional media companies, has evolved into the media powerhouse of the connected device era—mobile, online, tablets, Facebook, Mac, PCs and smart TVs. Complemented by successful global launches of merchandise, activity parks, beverages and books; the brand has amassed an enormous, electrified fan base.

Having announced in May 2012 that the Rovio had over 1 billion downloads, and with its 263 million monthly active users (December 2012), the company has both reach and high fan-engagement levels dwarfing many other tier one media brands. Rovio's  YouTube video channel, which houses dozens of custom animations, has garnered nearly 1 billion viral views; its retail products are now generating a major part of Rovio’s revenues, and its animation studio is working on a major motion picture release.

“In a time when many companies delight in millions of app downloads, Angry Birds’ cross-platform media continuously reaches hundreds of millions of fans in a fun and engaging way. With this incredible reach we are fast becoming one of the most important digital advertising destinations for global brands,” said Andrew Stalbow, EVP, Strategic Partnerships.

Today the company announced the expansion of its global brand advertising partnership team with senior hires in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.  With this new team, Rovio will now be a direct media partner to the largest brands in the world.

“Our new Brand Advertising Partnership Team in the U.S. will enable us to now partner directly with other lifestyle brands,” said Michele Tobin, Head of North American Brand Advertising Partnerships. “The model of simply placing standard display ads in online and mobile properties is not necessarily strategic for the majority of tier one brands, and that model was in need of disruption. Rovio´s fan-first approach and engaged audience creates more native, integrated advertising experiences that more closely align to brands’ overall marketing goals.”

New North American Brand Ad Partnership Team

In the U.S., Rovio has added two new, experienced members to its North American Brand Ad Partnership Team in New York and Los Angeles. The new team will add an additional thirty plus years of TV, digital and mobile ad partnership experience, and Rovio will continue to build this team across the states to meet the growing needs of brands.

Betsy Flounders Novak has joined the North American Team as the Director of West and Midwest.  Betsy has nearly 20 years of television, mobile and digital advertising experience.  She has extensive experience creating strategic advertising partnerships with some of the largest global brands through premium media companies such as MTV (including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, Spike and prominent MTV gaming properties), ESPN and People.com; as well as mobile display and video ad companies including Millennial Media and Rhythm New Media.

Matt Pfeffer, the new Director of the East Coast, is based in New York City, joining Rovio most recently from Millennial Media, a leading mobile advertising company; and he brings another decade of media experience from People.com, Ziff Davis and Golf Magazine.

New EMEA & APAC Brand Ad Partnership Team

“Brands and agencies in Europe and Asia want to work directly with scalable, next generation media companies, in unique ways,” said Todd Tran, Head of EMEA and APAC Brand Advertising Partnership Team.  “As a media platform, we have now achieved tier-one global reach and we have an opportunity to really pioneer true integrated cross platform brand experiences.”

Todd Tran has joined Rovio to lead its new EMEA and APAC Brand Partnership Ad Team, based in London.  Todd was most recently the EMEA General Manager of Apple’s mobile advertising business, where he successfully launched iAd in Europe.  He has 12 years of digital media and advertising experience including launching a digital and mobile agency for WPP in Europe. His previous experience also includes working as a management consultant in the technology and media practice at Bain & Company.

Raphaelle Tripet will join Todd Tran’s team in mid-February from inMobi, a leading global mobile advertising ad network.  Her prior experience includes digital ad sales at Nokia Interactive Advertising and strategic media planning at MEC.

Rovio announces John Cohen as the producer of Angry Birds moviehttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/248/rovio-announces-john-cohen-as-the-producer-of-angry-birds-movieDavid Maisel to executive produce upcoming 3D CG-animated feature film, debuting summer 2016

December 11th, 2012 -- Santa Monica, California -- On the third anniversary of the release of Angry Birds, Rovio Entertainment announced that Despicable Me producer John Cohen has signed on as producer of the upcoming Angry Birds movie. David Maisel, former Chairman of Marvel Studios and executive producer of Iron Man, will be executive producer of the feature film, coming to theaters in summer 2016. The film will be produced and financed by Rovio Entertainment.

“John’s an exceptionally talented producer, and we’re delighted to have him join the flock,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment. “With John’s hands-on producer background and David´s expertise in establishing and running his own successful studio, these two are the dream team for making a movie outside the studio system. Both professionals have the ideal skills and vision to achieve incredible things.”

John Cohen most recently produced Illumination Entertainment/Universal Pictures' Despicable Me in 2010 and executive produced Illumination/Universal's Hop in 2011. Prior to Illumination, Cohen was VP of Production at Twentieth Century Fox Animation. He worked closely with Blue Sky Studios on films including Ice Age, Robots, Ice Age: The Meltdown and Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who. Cohen had the idea to reimagine Alvin and the Chipmunks and developed the 2007 film.

“I’m so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael, David, and Rovio’s incredibly talented game developers and artists,” said Cohen. “From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."

Following Marvel Studios’ example, which was architected by David Maisel, Rovio will produce and finance the movie outside the studio system and retain full creative control while creating innovative entertainment at the highest level of quality.

"John's experience, expertise, and passion are perfect for the Angry Birds film and I look forward to working with him to create the best movie experience for all the fans,” said David Maisel.

The upcoming movie marks Rovio Entertainment’s first foray into feature films, though fans have already gotten an introduction to the Angry Birds world through Rovio’s games, books, consumer products, and animations. Since its debut in 2009, the Angry Birds game has been downloaded more than 1 billion times across platforms and versions. The most recent venture, Angry Birds Star Wars, soared to the top of the US iPhone charts within 2.5 hours of release.

Rovio and CERN to collaborate on new learning experienceshttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/229/rovio-and-cern-to-collaborate-on-new-learning-experiencesOctober 12, 2012 -- Frankfurt -- The Angry Birds have taken flight in CERN as CERN Director General Rolf Heuer and Rovio Mighty Eagle, CMO Peter Vesterbacka announced the start of a new collaboration on fun learning experiences. This was also the kick-off for Rovio's new brand, Angry Birds Playground, a learning programme for 3 to 8-year-olds based on the Finnish National Curriculum for kindergarten. The Rovio-CERN collaboration is looking into ways of developing amazing learning resources.

Angry Birds Playground collaborates with the best partners on the planet and all possible dimensions to make learning fun. Collaboration with CERN is a natural choice after working with great partners such as the National Geographic Society.

“Modern physics has been around for 100 years, but it’s still a mystery to many people. Working together with Rovio, we can teach kids quantum physics by making it fun and easy to understand,” said CERN’s Head of Education, Rolf Landua, at the Frankfurt Book Fair.

“It’s a great fit for both sides, combining physics and Angry Birds in a fun way. Rovio has a great platform, with a broad reach and highly engaged fans, which makes this collaboration very promising. With Rovio and Angry Birds Playground, we get a great channel to communicate what CERN does,” said Landua.

“Rovio and Angry Birds Playground make learning fun,” said Peter Vesterbacka, Mighty Eagle and CMO. “When you’re really interested, you can learn anything. With Playground products, kids can have fun and learn more about physics than they would’ve in the ‘old-fashioned’ style of learning. I’ve been to CERN and experienced it myself. It’s a fun place to visit!”

Rovio has already demonstrated its reach with its first book app, Bad Piggies Egg Recipes, which launched yesterday. The app is already the #1 paid book app for iPad across the globe, including in the US, Canada, France, Germany, and Spain.

Rovio Entertainment debuts its first-ever book apphttp://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/228/rovio-entertainment-debuts-its-first-ever-book-app

October 11, 2012 -- Frankfurt -- Rovio Entertainment launched its new cookbook app, Bad Piggies Best Egg Recipes, at the Frankfurt Book Fair. This one-of-a-kind iPad app offers informative, surprising, and colorful egg recipes plus full social media integration for an app that’s perfect for sharing and enjoying with friends.

“We wanted to create a cookbook that brings a family together to actively do things together with the characters they all love,” said Peter Vesterbacka, Mighty Eagle and CMO. “It’s fully interactive at every stage -- from seeing the illustrations come to life to sharing photos with your friends and family.”

Bad Piggies Best Egg Recipes draws from Rovio’s 2011 award-winning cookbook of the same name, but adds additional features that take full advantage of the tablet’s interactivity. The app features step-by-step photo instructions of 41 egg recipes, an in-app egg timer, and eye-catching and surprising photos of the finished dishes “prepared” by the pigs. The app is also chock full of charming illustrations which offer more than meets the eye: they’re full of interactive easter eggs that bring the birds and piggies to life.

“What makes this cookbook special is that the photographs of the app are taken by the pigs, which means that your own dish always looks better than the ones in the book,” said Sanna Lukander, VP of Books.  “Quite a change from the average cookbooks on the market!”

Bad Piggies Egg Recipes is normally $4.99 USD (or local currency equivalent), but is available now at the Apple App Store at the special introductory price of $.99. A Chinese language version of the app, featuring some new recipes and photos, is also available from the Chinese App Store.

The physical cookbook released last year won “Best First Cookbook of the Year” at 2012’s Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

Bad Piggies available now!http://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/222/bad-piggies-available-nowSeptember 27 -- Espoo, Finland -- Rovio Entertainment released its newest game, Bad Piggies, for iOS, Android, Mac, and PC. Told from the pigs’ point of view, this innovative game lets fans build amazing machines that crawl, roll, crash, and fly the pigs to the eggs!

“We’ve never done anything like this,” said Petri Järvilehto, EVP of Games. “Where Angry Birds was all about destruction, Bad Piggies is all about the joy of construction. It’s not just about getting three stars -- in this game, failing is almost as much fun as succeeding!”

The game is set on Piggy Island, where the Bad Piggies are after the eggs again -- but as usual, nothing is going according to plan. They need help in creating the ultimate flying machine and steering it safely to their destination.

With more than 60 levels, and free updates coming up, there’s hours and hours of pig-crashing, exploding, and flying fun. Fans can unlock an additional 30 levels by getting three stars, and four sandbox levels let them stretch their creativity to the utmost. With 33 objects available to create the ultimate machine, the sky’s the limit -- if you can navigate around all the obstacles first!

This is the first time the Bad Piggies are protagonists of a game, but it’s just the beginning of a series of Bad Piggies related games and other entertainment.

Bad Piggies is available now on iOS, Android, Mac, and PC, with Windows Phone coming soon. For more information, check out BadPiggies.com, or follow Bad Piggies on Facebook or Twitter. Press inquiries may be sent to media@rovio.com.

It doesn’t take being famous to be a part in Freddie For A Day. All you need to decide is whether you are bold enough to go for a full sparkly body leotard, head-to-toe PVC biker leathers, or simply to stick with aviator sunglasses and of course.... that ‘stache!  Comic Relief has the red nose, Freddie For A Day has the famous bristles.

About Green Day

GREEN DAY - vocalist/guitarist BILLIE JOE ARMSTRONG bassist Mike Dirnt, and drummer Tré Cool – were kids from working-class backgrounds who came of age in the underground punk scene in Berkeley. Even though they had released two records prior (1039 / Smoothed Out Slappy Hours and Kerplunk), they announced their arrival with 1994's Dookie, a dynamic blast of exuberant punk-pop that sold 15 million copies and earned the band its first Grammy® Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. Over the years, Green Day continued to top the charts with their subsequent studio albums Insomniac, Nimrod and Warning, while entertaining millions of fans with their frenetic live shows. But it was their landmark 2004 album American Idiot that launched Green Day into the stratosphere. American Idiot debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard chart, spawned five hit singles, earned seven Grammy® nominations (winning two, including Best Rock Album), and raised the bar for modern rock and roll. In 2009, Green Day released 21st Century Breakdown, which won a 2010 Grammy® Award for Best Rock Album. It spawned two hit singles: the gold “Know Your Enemy,” which was the first song ever to top Billboard’s Rock, Alternative, and Mainstream Rock charts simultaneously, and the double-platinum “21 Guns,” which earned them three 2009 MTV Video Music Awards including Best Rock Video. Green Day also took home an American Music Award for Favorite Alternative Rock Music Artist. Later that year, Green Day collaborated with Tony Award winning director of Spring Awakening, Michael Mayer, for the stage musical of American Idiot. The play bowed at the Berkeley Repertory Theatre in September 2009 and set attendance records during its limited engagement. The play went on to Broadway and ran for a year at the St. James Theatre and won two Tony Awards. Their highly anticipated album Green Day ¡Uno!, the first in a trilogy of new releases, will bow this fall followed by Green Day ¡Dos! And Green Day  ¡Tré!. I'm super excited to set up Rovio’s first development studio outside Finland, and over the years to come, create awesome entertainment delighting people from every corner of the world!"

Burman has been working in the video games business since the early nineties, when he co-founded one of the first game developers in Sweden, UDS. From there he moved on to a Studio Manager position at Avalanche Studios, and most recently landed as General Manager at Easy, an EA owned online studio focusing on F2P shooters. In addition, he’s a board member at Dataspelsbranschen, the trade organization for the Swedish games industry. In his career so far, he’s been in key roles on several high profile titles, including Just Cause 2 and Battlefield Heroes.

“Oskar's experience, vision, and track record speaks for itself,”  said Petri Järvilehto, EVP of Games at Rovio. “We’re delighted to welcome Oskar to the flock and look forwarding to building a highly creative games development team in Stockholm under his leadership.”

At Rovio’s Stockholm office, Burman will be focused on bringing Sweden’s best talent together to work for the world’s fastest growing and most innovative entertainment company. Similar to Rovio’s Tampere studio, the new games studio will be focused on supporting Rovio in both current and upcoming game projects.

Positions at the Stockholm office are already open, and talented game developers, programmers, artists, and producers are strongly encouraged to apply at Rovio Careers.

Kovalainen will also be sporting a brand new co-branded Angry Birds helmet, which will debut at this weekend’s inaugural Formula 1 race in Melbourne, Australia.

“This is a great partnership on many levels,” said Heikki Kovalainen. “It’s the first time that I’ve partnered with a gaming company, and it fits with my larger focus on partnering with unique brands. As a Finn, I’m also happy to be backing a Finnish company on a global platform. Most importantly, I’m a big Angry Birds fan!”

Angry Birds Space announced - from space!http://www.rovio.com/en/news/blog/140/angry-birds-space-announced-from-space

March 8, 2012 – Espoo, Finland / International Space Station – Rovio Entertainment debuted the brand new Angry Birds game, Angry Birds Space, with a launch announcement that was literally out of this world! Working in cooperation with NASA, Rovio broadcast a video from the International Space Station in a global online announcement at the angrybirds.com/space website.

Angry Birds Space will launch simultaneously on iOS and Android, Mac and PC, animation, merchandise, and book publishing on March 22. The game hits the appstores with 60 puzzling levels, new Angry Birds characters, new superpowers, and new gameplay. More levels will be available both as free regular updates, as well as in-app purchases.

Rovio will showcase the new gameplay on the Samsung Galaxy Note at the SXSWi conference on March 9 in collaboration with Samsung Mobile.

First-ever game announcement from space

Speaking from the space station, Flight Engineer Don Pettit of NASA used Angry Birds Space to explain the unique properties of physics in space, including a demonstration of a catapult in zero gravity using an Angry Bird.

This is just the beginning of what will be a long and fruitful partnership between Rovio and NASA on educational efforts.

"This collaboration began with a simple Twitter exchange about birds and pigs in space, and it has grown into a tremendous outreach and education opportunity," said David Weaver, associate administrator for communications at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "Games are fun and entertaining, but they also can be inspirational and informative. This ongoing collaboration with Rovio and Angry Birds is an exciting way to get people engaged with NASA's missions of exploration and discovery, and get students energized about future careers in science and technology."

“We focused on every detail in development of Angry Birds Space to build a special experience for our fans,” says Peter Vesterbacka, CMO and Mighty Eagle of Rovio Entertainment. “I believe we have succeeded well with the game, and we wanted to create something as unique around our launch events. NASA has been the perfect partner for our Angry Birds Space programme, and we can’t wait to work with them on creating more compelling educational experiences.”

In keeping with the focus on education and fun, Rovio is also delighted to be partnering with National Geographic Books on the official companion book to the Angry Birds Space game.

New characters and gameplay

By taking the game galactic, Angry Birds Space retains the familiar elements of Angry Birds gameplay but gives them a unique twist in a variable gravity environment. From the weightlessness of space to the gravity wells of nearby planets, fans can have fun with physics as they try out new gameplay possibilities. The Angry Birds themselves have also transformed into superheroes, with new costumes and abilities.

Experimenting with physics has never been so much fun!
