This was one of the world’s largest user generated events with thousands of entries from every corner of the planet.



The new Angry Birds Play the Next Level episode would not have been possible without the support of Rovio’s friends and partners who have played a key role in Angry Birds’ five year story. The partners who called on their communities to take part in the social media competition were Angry Birds Nest, CERN, Google Play, LucasFilm, National Geographic, NHL, Pigineering, Shanghai Oriental Pearl Tower, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twitter, UNICEF, WWF and collaborator NASA.


“When we saw the first concept image for Angry Birds back in December 2009, there was a strong feeling that this was an idea that would take flight - but we couldn’t have dreamt of its scale”, said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “In the past five years Angry Birds has grown into one of the most recognized brands in the world, and Rovio has grown into a global entertainment company producing games, books, animations, theme parks and many other products including a feature film due out in July of 2016.”

Rovio estimates that its workforce will be reduced by approximately 110 employees. As part of its reorganization, several positions have been opened for internal applicants. The final number of employees impacted depends on how many of these new positions are filled. Rovio will consolidate all its Finland operations in Espoo, resulting in discontinuing the Tampere studio operations under Rovio.

Espoo/Finland -- London/United Kingdom -- November 17th, 2014 -- United for Wildlife and Rovio Entertainment unite to help save Pangolins, one of the world’s most endangered species from extinction.  The eight species of Pangolins live in tropical regions of Asia and Africa and are being threatened by illegal poaching for meat and scales. Their only own defense is to roll up into a ball when threatened.

Starting on November 17th through the 23rd, anyone can help raise awareness of the adorable Pangolins' plight for survival by playing Roll with the Pangolin, a tournament in Angry Birds Friends. Players are tasked to free illegally captured pangolins learning about their plight in the process.

In addition to the game, Rovio have created a series of videos where The Duke of Cambridge, President of United for Wildlife, describes the Pangolins’ situation and the important activities United for Wildlife is carrying out globally for wildlife preservation that are viewable in Rovio’s Toons.tv video channel available on all Angry Birds games.

 "By spreading the message about poaching, I hope you can be part of a movement that says no to poached ivory and rhino horn, and many other animal parts," The Duke of Cambridge says in the video messages. "With the help of Angry Birds, we have created an Angry Birds Friends tournament for the Pangolins, so you can have some fun while learning more about them and the wider issue of poaching."

CMI and Rovio Entertainment take a stance on peace

-- Finland -- November 10, 2014 -- After almost five years of on-going conflict between the birds and the pigs, Rovio and CMI are pleased to announce that Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Martti Ahtisaari has managed the impossible: a truce in the epic and ongoing conflict between birds and pigs in the Angry Birds world. Check out the peace negotiation video!

During Ahtisaari Days, held in Finland, November 11 to 13, King Pig and Red will put aside their differences and commit to peace, in what will be both an important milestone for the Angry Birds universe and an engaging way to spread knowledge of an important issue.

“It is my eternal optimism that all conflicts can be solved” says President Ahtisaari. “What are we trying to achieve? Human rights, decent healthcare, truth, reconciliation and a fair eggaliterian society”, he adds.

“1.5 billion people, every fifth person on the planet, are being robbed of freedom and basic human rights because of conflict”, said Blanca Juti, Chief Marketing Officer of Rovio. “We wanted to support CMI, the conflict resolution organisation founded by President Ahtisaari, by bringing awareness to the importance of conflict resolution and peace mediation. Angry Birds world offered the perfect way to do this and we are delighted to be part of the Ahtisaari Days.”

Angry Birds Stella takes center stage in Chinese Idols Finals

 

Espoo, Finland -- November 7th 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment, the creator of Angry Birds, is pleased to announce its partnership with the Digital Entertainment Business Division of Alibaba Group and introduce Angry Birds Stella to fans through Chinese Idols, broadcasted by Shanghai Media Group.

Starting today, Angry Birds Stella will be seen throughout the season Finals of Chinese Idols, brightening the stage and inspiring fans with weekly behind the scenes footage of the popular television series in a dedicated section of the in-game channel, ToonsTV exclusively for China.

ESPOO, Finland – October 31st, 2014 – Angry Birds Stella and friends come to ToonsTV with a brand new animated series full of adventure, fun - and drama! The first season, with 13 inspiring  six-minute episodes, is premiering tomorrow worldwide. Last week fans got a little surprise when the first episode was exclusively premiered inside the Angry Birds Stella game, over a week before the global launch. Angry Birds Stella series is all about the story - an entirely new, dramatic and engaging narrative that will develop throughout the season and open up the world of the flock’s fearless characters. Why did Gale get the nickname “Bad Princess?” Can Stella and Gale be friends again? How do Stella, Poppy, Luca, Dahlia and Willow rock out with their clashing personalities - and their superpowers? Can there be friendship and adventure, without any complications? We can’t give out any spoilers, but there will be some cliffhangers!

Weekly episodes will be released on Saturdays on Rovio’s ToonsTV channel, which gained over 3 billion views in record time.  The series will also make its way to TV and VoD services reaching hundreds of millions of homes worldwide.

The RETRY soundtrack features a collection of songs inspired by 80s power anthems as well as Miami Vice aesthetics. Rovio’s newest flock of feisty birds, Angry Birds Stella, celebrating individual uniqueness, female heroism and empowerment, will also come alive in a series of books, The Stella Diaries.

Published by Egmont Publishing in English, the empowering Stella series will also be distributed through Worldreader’s mobile reading application for feature and low-end android phones, called Worldreader Mobile, available to children and families in more than 175 countries. The Stella Diaries inspire children to read more while exploring their own natural super powers, which include reading and studying. The learning research space to be opened with Rovio is the latest example of such cooperation.

The University’s Department of Teacher Education has established the Playful Learning Center (PLC), which researches playful learning together with businesses. The aim of the Center is to research and teach new learning solutions together with education experts and Finnish companies, and to enhance Finland’s status as a leading nation in education.

The opening of the Center also coincides with the establishment of the Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab, which will study learning solutions based on Rovio Learning’s philosophy of fun learning as well as the Angry Birds Playground early education project.

New partnerships

“The Playful Learning Center combines two areas of Finnish excellence, pedagogy and the technology industry. It offers new and interesting opportunities to develop learning in kindergartens, schools and different communities throughout an individual’s life,” explains Kristiina Kumpulainen, professor in pre-primary and primary education at the University of Helsinki.

"We invite all interested parties to join the cooperation. The Center enables multidisciplinary research that makes use of the University of Helsinki’s strong, internationally recognised expertise.”

Launched with Tekes funding, the Center is located on Siltavuorenpenger in Helsinki. Tekes is the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Making use of the research space for learning

At the first stage, the Center will house Rovio Learning's international Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab which focuses on developing fun learning solutions. The Center and the research cooperation are a natural continuation of the work the University of Helsinki has done with Rovio Learning in researching and providing training in playful learning solutions. The teachers for the first Angry Birds Playground kindergartens in China run by 123 Education Development Ltd have been trained in collaboration by the Helsinki University’s Department of Teacher Education and Rovio Learning. Openings will take place during the Fall.

Rovio Learning is known for collaborating with a number of scientific and educational brands and institutions such as NASA, CERN, the National Geographic Society and the University of Helsinki. “Learning can be seriously fun! We are happy to cooperate with the University of Helsinki to find out more about what can be learned through the research on playful learning”, says Sanna Lukander, Vice President of Rovio Learning.

The Rovio Fun Learning Research Lab and the tools it contains offer a wide range of cooperation opportunities. Participation in the research will be opened up to groups of children and their supervisors in pre-primary and primary education, students, product developers, training specialists as well as international experts and institutions in the field.

The goal has been to provide researchers with a versatile, easy-to-use research environment which also utilises technology. The sponsor providing electronic devices is Samsung.

Espoo, Finland -- August 29, 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment -- After more than five years of leading Rovio and successfully turning Angry Birds into a global entertainment phenomenon, Mikael Hed will be succeeded as Chief Executive Officer by Pekka Rantala on January 1, 2015.

Pekka Rantala has more than 20 years of international leadership experience within branded consumer products in various industries.

The Chairman of the Board, Kaj Hed, has nominated Mikael Hed for a Board of Directors position. In addition, Mikael Hed has also been appointed as Chairman of Rovio Animation Studios, where he will oversee Animation and Movies.

The CEO transition will happen by January 1, 2015. Between now and then, Pekka will work closely with Mikael to ensure a smooth succession.

“It has been an amazing ride and in the coming months I will be very happy to pass the hoodie to Pekka Rantala, who will take Rovio to the next level,” Mikael Hed said. “Pekka is known to be a great leader with experience building successful global consumer brands. I will continue to play an active role and will support Pekka in any way I can to ensure Rovio’s continued success.”

Stella, Poppy, Willow, Dahlia and Luca share a common love for adventure and fun, but as in the real world, their colorful personalities sometimes clash! Still, they pull together to find creative and fun solutions to their problems. There’s also Gale, a good bird gone bad, who wants to rule over the birds’ island habitat. True to the Angry Birds spirit, Stella and her friends have a playful, offbeat attitude and great sense of humor. After all, they’re best friends forever – most of the time!

Angry Birds Stella is an inclusive brand that engages everybody, but also celebrates female heroism. Released in September 2013, the game features the most extensive roster of playable characters of any Angry Birds title so far, including the first chance to play as the pigs by joining the Pork Side. At launch, Hasbro introduced the innovative TELEPODS platform, powered by Retoy, where players use smart devices to “teleport” their physical TELEPODS figures into game, and released more than 30 different TELEPODS figures including Rebel Birds and Imperial Pigs.

To celebrate this momentous milestone, Rovio is releasing a brand-new chapter for Angry Birds Star Wars II called Rise of the Clones, which brings 44 levels featuring new gameplay elements like wind and water currents.

“We’re thrilled at how popular the TELEPODS platform is with our fans,” said Jami Laes, EVP Games of Rovio. “Rovio is constantly exploring novel ways to delight the world with new entertainment technology, including ways for players to experience our games in both the physical and digital space. Rovio has set foot strongly into the global consumer products licensing business, while transitioning from a mobile games company to a global entertainment company with a diversified portfolio covering games, animation, books and location based entertainment.

Naz Cuevas has been promoted to Executive Vice President of Global Consumer Products Licensing. “Naz Cuevas joined Rovio in 2012 and has done an outstanding job of focusing and developing our consumer licensing products line. She has lead innovation through the integration of the digital and physical worlds and most importantly ensured that our products continue to offer enormous delight to our fans,” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “I’m also very proud to announce that Naz’s team has been reinforced and that we are strengthening our support to developing territories.”

Randi Spieker has joined as VP of Licensing and Retail for North America. Randi has over 20 years experience in the licensing industry, was formerly VP of Licensing at Hybrid/Jem, and has played key roles at Mattel Consumer Products and Paramount Pictures Consumer Products. Randi has a proven track record in retail and will be building a strong retail and account management team for this territory, with a special focus on softlines, fashion collections, activewear and trend categories.

Joe Lawson has joined as VP of Licensing and Retail for Asia Pacific & Latin America. With over 19 years experience in the entertainment industry, Joe was formerly Head of International Promotions at DreamWorks Animation and spent 12 years at 20th Century Fox Consumer Products overseeing countless promotional partnerships for The Simpsons and other titles. Joe will be expanding Rovio’s international markets while also strengthening the current licensing agents in his territories, with a special focus on promotional activations.

Paul Bufton will shortly join the flock as VP of Licensing and Retail for EMEA. Paul is arriving from Warner Bros. Consumer Products UK. With over 18 years experience in the Consumer Products industry, he is an executive with an established reputation for delivering strategic marketing and licensing initiatives on high profile properties such as DC Comics, Harry Potter, Scooby-Doo, Fisher-Price, Lego and Star Wars. Paul will be building a strong retail and sales team for this territory, with a special focus on hardlines, collectibles, and sporting goods while also playing a crucial role in the Hasbro partnership.

Pekka Rantala has a solid track record with over twenty years of experience in sales and marketing of consumer brands across several industries, from technology to fast-moving consumer goods. Prior to joining Rovio, Pekka held various executive positions. At Nokia he was responsible for all worldwide go-to-market and marketing activities as SVP, Marketing. Before that he was responsible for Nokia’s business in Europe, Russia and former CIS countries as SVP, Customer and Market Operations. Most recently Pekka served as Managing Director of Fazer Brands and CEO of Hartwall, Finland.

Espoo, Finland -- April 28th 2014 -- Rovio Entertainment Ltd, the creator of the globally loved Angry Birds brand, announced today its financial results for the full 2013 calendar year.

Rovio´s total consolidated full-year revenue amounted to €156 million (2010: €6.5 million, 2011: €75.6 million, 2012: €152.2 million). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) were €36.5 million (2010: €3.1 million, 2011: €46.9 million, 2012: €76.8 million), and net profit after tax was  €26.9 million (2010: €3 million, 2011: €35.4 million, 2012: €55,5 million).

“After three years of very strong growth, 2013 was a foundation-building year. We invested in new business areas, such as animation and video distribution, ventured into new business models in games, and consolidated our strong market position in consumer products licensing. With these investments we have been gearing up for the future  growing markets”, said Rovio CFO Herkko Soininen.

“Building on top of our games business, where we moved into free-to-play, Rovio set its foot strongly into the entertainment business. In 2013 we formed a world-class movie animation production team in Los Angeles that is already working on the first Angry Birds feature film, to be globally premiered in July 2016. In addition we built the biggest animation studio in the Nordics for the production of animated TV content, bringing to market 42 Angry Birds Toons episodes in its first year. In launching ToonsTV, we introduced new means of content delivery, with 2 billion views already. On the licensing side, we continued to push digital and physical integration”, said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio.

2013 was a year of milestones. First, Rovio rocked the video distribution industry by launching the innovative ToonsTV, its very own distribution channel. Rovio Stars, a third-party games publishing program was launched, publishing three exciting games throughout the year. There was also the opening of numerous Angry Birds attractions including six Activity Parks, located across Spain, Finland and China. Rovio Books produced over 100 fun titles in over 30 languages across more than 40 countries. Plus, Rovio Learning proudly presented Angry Birds Playground – an inspiring physical learning space combined with our breakthrough teaching philosophy.
 

Strengthening foundations and opening new markets

2013 was a year of solid results, underpinned by increased investments to drive the transition to the free-to-play economy as well as to strengthen the company’s entertainment foundations. Towards the end of the year Rovio launched Angry Birds Star Wars II, which was acclaimed by fans worldwide. Soon after  it launched Angry Birds Go!, Rovio’s first free-to-play and non-slingshot Angry Birds game. Both launches rolled out a wide selection of top-selling consumer products, including  Hasbro TELEPODS™ and animations, while the games themselves went on to top the charts in over 150 countries.

Driven by these launches, and updates to existing games, the company's gaming revenues and gaming-related advertising revenue remained strong. The main revenue sources were paid games, free-to-play virtual goods, and advertising.                

Rovio’s Consumer Products business continued to perform strongly, accounting for 47% of total revenue in 2013, and there was expansion of the Consumer Products line into the important Russian and Latin American markets. Rovio also started a compliance program aimed at having a positive impact on production processes and improving transparency.

To match the investments made during 2013, the number of Rovio employees grew from around 500 to 800.
 

Market and business development expectations

“Future business will, for the most part, depend on how well last year’s investments perform and how our new properties delight our audiences. We are actively investing in the company to increase our capabilities for the future, and this year will see exciting new content and services coming from all our business areas”, said Herkko Soininen CFO of Rovio.

“Angry Birds has exceeded 2 billion downloads so far, making it the most downloaded game brand ever. We’re creating long lasting business, and strongly believe our entertainment strategy will consolidate Rovio’s position as one of the world’s most beloved brands”, added Mikael Hed, Rovio’s CEO.
