The Angry Birds Movie opens internationally, sets record May opening for an original animated film

15.5.2016

The Angry Birds Movie isn’t even out yet in America or in much of Asia, but it’s already a hit in territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South America, where the film opened this weekend.

Grossing $43 million, the film slingshotted straight to No. 1 in 42 markets altogether and set a record May opening for an original animated film.

For the same nest of markets at current rates, and without the benefit of school vacations or holidays, The Angry Birds Movie outdistanced such big animated titles as The Croods (9 percent), SpongeBob SquarePants 2 (11 percent), The Lego Movie (20 percent), Rio (14 percent), and How to Train Your Dragon (45 percent). It was also roughly on par with Big Hero 6.

Strong critical reception and great word of mouth ignited the box office on Saturday as The Angry Birds Movie displayed huge increases from Friday, suggesting a long successful run for the film. Next weekend these birds will soar to even greater heights with highly anticipated launches in the U.S., China and South Korea.
